High Demand And High Value: Why You Need To Hire A Cloud Specialist

In the US, adoption of cloud platforms and services in businesses is increasing 45% year on year. Meanwhile in EMEA, the public cloud services industry is predicted to reach $415.1 billion in 2028 – up from $203 billion in 2024.

The message is clear: cloud computing’s staggering market growth is by no means coming to an end any time soon.

With cloud set to be the default platform for businesses, investing in the right talent to set up, manage and maintain these systems is fast becoming a crucial element of any company’s IT strategies.

But building so much reliance on a relatively new industry and fast developing industry creates its own challenges. Most notably when it comes to securing the right professionals to build and futureproof your cloud potential.

The two challenges that threaten to hold back cloud computing potential in business are a lack in available specialists, and a lack of awareness from key decision makers in the full potential value of that cloud systems can add.

The Value of Cloud Platforms

Most company IT strategies take into account the agility and efficiency benefits of cloud – and in many cases that’s enough of a benefit to convince firms to make the switch. But there’s so much more that a comprehensive cloud strategy can deliver.

Firstly is Cost efficiency. The initial costs of migrating systems and hiring someone to manage the strategy may seem steep at first, but comparatively there’s a huge drop in capital expenditure when you no longer need to install, store and maintain physical servers. Updates, security and service issues are also usually handled by cloud providers.

Then there’s Scalability, Flexibility and Collaboration. With teams able to access systems from anywhere and a lack of physical infrastructure required, your operations can expand beyond the office, and grow as fast as you need without additional costs.

Security is a key asset that is essential for any business. Cloud providers offer advanced threat detection and AI monitoring to keep you safe from cyber attack. But in the event that there is a failure or attack, built in redundancy and backup solutions, securely stored on the cloud mean your business can make a fast recovery.

Finally there are Sustainability benefits. Many cloud data centres are built with renewable energy and net-zero initiatives in mind. Factoring in the efficiency of many operations taking place in one data centre opposed to individual infrastructure from the same number of businesses, cloud computing offers an overall more environmentally beneficial solution.

Most importantly, businesses who do integrate cloud solutions strategically within their operational structures report multiple benefits over their previous systems In a report from Deloitte last year, the majority of US cloud-decision makers agreed that these technologies can service as a “force multiplier” of their digital strategy, identifying nine strategic business measures that saw positive outcomes:

  • Increasing efficiency and agility
  • Expanding existing product/service revenue
  • Reducing / optimising costs
  • Building net new product / service revenue
  • Mitigating business and regulatory risk
  • Developing new ideas, approaches or methodologies
  • Creating new operational processes or workflows
  • Expanding into new markets
  • Providing better sustainability in support of environmental issues

Any one of the above is a strong reason to embrace cloud technologies, but a strong business case should consider how they can maximise the potential of all nine.

Sourcing cloud professionals

Of course, setting out the strategy is only the first step. Once you know what you want to get out of a comprehensive cloud computing strategy, you need to have the expertise available to properly build, integrate and maintain it.

But that’s where the second major challenge lies – this is a relatively new industry, meaning experienced professionals are hard to come by. Factor in the high demand caused by dramatic uptake across all businesses of cloud computing requirements and you’re left with a significant talent gap that’s difficult to overcome.

Where is the greatest talent gap in cloud computing? Specific areas include:

  • Cloud Security & Compliance
Experts in managing EU regulations ranging from GDPR to DORA are extremely high in demand, making these roles some of the hardest to fill.
  • Cloud DevOps Engineers.
If you really want to get the most out of your cloud systems you need efficient automations, CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) capabilities. Experts in engineering cloud-native DevOps have very specific experiences, but these roles simply haven’t been around long enough for many to have built up a solid level of experience.
  • Cloud Solutions Architects.
The brains behind the strategy, these specialists understand what is required to achieve your cloud goals – and what challenges are preventing you from getting there. These experts require a combination of technical knowledge and business acumen to develop scalable solutions that will achieve their goals. It’s a hybrid requirement that can be difficult to locate.
  • Multi & Hybrid Cloud Specialists.
It’s rare to find a mid to large company that only uses one system for all it’s operations. But that menas that your specialists have to be able to work across multiple platforms AND develop usable integration processes. This comes down to a training issue – someone who focuses all their learning on a system like Microsoft Azure might find themselves at a disadvantage against someone with broader experience across multiple platforms.

Will it get easier to source cloud specialists?

The growth of the market is no secret and the influx of businesses launching their own cloud products brings with it opportunities, both in the simplification of systems and in the potential to outsource much of the work. Plus many of these are developing their own training programmes, and anyone with an interest in an IT career should be looking at building their own skillsets in the above listed roles if they want to capitalise on the high demand for these roles.

Despite this, the future’s not all straightforward for finding cloud professionals.

The speed of cloud adoption still massively outpaces the talent pipeline – training and invested experts can’t keep up with the explosive growth of demand this industry’s seen. There’s also the challenge of relevancy – many training might specialise in one system or may build on advanced capabilities that sound like exciting breakthroughs, but are less needed in the average business’s day to day operations.

Which also brings us to burnout. High demand creates high pressure on those specialists who are employed – who may find themselves buried under the weight of excessive workloads to develop multitudes of relatively routine requirements, as opposed to the flashy advances they were hoping to work on.

And when they’ve had enough, there are plenty of opportunities available to them. One of the biggest benefits to cloud systems is their remote capabilities and this also offers opportunities to those specialising in the sector – they can be seeking lucrative opportunities anywhere in the world.
