January 2019 saw fell runner Jasmin Paris from Hadfield in Derbyshire, win the Montane Spine Race, dubbed as “Britain’s most brutal running race.” The 268-mile non-stop race stretches from Edale in Derbyshire along the Pennine Way to the Scottish Borders.
The determined runner beat all 136 competitors from 15 different countries around the world, including 125 men, to win the race, despite having to express milk for her 14-month-old infant along the way.
Jasmin completed the course in 83 hours 12 minutes, taking occasional pauses to eat, express milk and have a power nap.
Not only did Jasmin finish first in this gruelling running race, but she smashed the men’s course record by more than a staggering 12 hours.
Jasmin Paris works as a vet at the University of Edinburgh where she also studies acute myeloid leukaemia. The fell runner spoke of her relentless and demanding training sessions for the race, which saw her get up around 4am each morning and train on the hills in the Edinburgh vicinity before her family, work and study commitments. To practice running with a backpack, Jasmin would go on long hikes carrying her baby.
Damian Hill, a leading British ultrarunner and former Spine Race finisher, spoke of Jasmin Paris’s incredible achievement.
“Her performance was extraordinary – one of the great British ultra-running performances.
“She showed incredible determination and focus,” said Hill.
Long-distance runner and World, European and Commonwealth medallist Jo Pavey referred to Jasmin’s performance as “awesome and inspiring.”
